Doug, born and raised in Brantford, has been providing legal advice and assistance to his valued clients for 32 years, now restricting his practice to all aspects of Family Law: Divorce; Marriage, Cohabitation and Separation Contracts; Paternity and Custody/Access Disputes; Child and Spousal Support; Division of Assets and Debts; etc.; etc. He is proud of the large number of cases he has resolved without having to have a Trial. Doug believes in that ancient Chinese saying that "The best general is not the man who fights 100 battles and wins, but rather the man who wins 100 battles without fighting any".
Many clients find the relatively new concept of Collaborative Family Law as a preferred way to resolve their Family Law issues. Doug is a qualified Collaborative Family Law lawyer and Charter Member of the Brant Haldimand-Norfolk Collaborative Family Law Practice Group. Visit it's website at www.collaborativefamilylawgroup.ca.
You may be familiar with Doug's name because of his extensive community involvement including 6 years as an Alderman (councillor) on Brantford City Council; six years including two terms as chair person of the Brantford Police Services Board and as a member of numerous other municipal and community boards, commissions and organizations. He is an past director of the Brantford Symphony Orchestra and a current member of its Artists' Selection and Programming Committee.
Doug attended Grandview Public School and is a 1964 graduate of North Park Collegiate in Brantford. Before his election to Brantford City Council in 1968 Doug was an Elder and Cub Scout leader at Sydenham Street United Church in Brantford of which he remains a member. He is past Director of the Brantford Regional Chamber of Commerce and was recipient of its 1981 President's Award. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1976 from the University of Western Ontario and was called to the bar and commenced practicing law in 1978. Doug and his wife Anne are active members of The Brantford Club, Anne currently serving as co-chairperson of its Special Events/Social Events Committee.
Doug is the former Area Director of the Brant/Brantford Area Office of Legal Aid Ontario, was a member and active participant in the Ontario Court of Justice Bench and Bar (Court Liaison) Committees and a former Deputy Judge of the Small Claims Court at Brantford. He was a member of the panel of lawyers providing legal services to children through the Office of the Children's Lawyer for more than 20 years prior to his retirement from that position in the spring of 2009. Doug continues to assist Legal Aid Ontario by conducting, as mediator, Legal Aid facilitated Settlement Conferences at the request of the District Area Director of Legal Aid Ontario responsible for Brantford, Hamilton, Oakville, St. Catharines, Welland, Cayuga, Simcoe, Kitchener and Guelph.
While Doug's preference and priority is to resolve his family law client's issues through negotiation and agreement he has extensive Court experience in both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice in cases where a negotiated settlement is not possible.
